Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
